Question about cylinder head cover removal.
03/01/18 at 11:15:29
I did read Greg Savage's excellent post on removing the Savage head cover. Also, I did print off and enlarge his diagram of the head cover bolt
pattern and will use it on a box to keep my bolts in the correct place. What a smart man and a great idea!
QUESTION;
My question is that in the Clymer manual, it states in the head cover removal description to " not remove the bolt with the concave head wit the letter "A" as this bolt secures the exhaust rocker arm shaft"
So do I remove all the bolts but that one, or remove that one also.
Any other strange things I may have overlooked
Looking forward to cleaning up the mess in there and I have a versey plug coming- thankfully !

There is no need to remove that one unless your replacing the rocker arm, there is one other that you can leave , that is the bolt that holds the decompression shaft in place. Sometimes it's easy to forget the two bolts that are just inside the valve inspection covers.good luck!

Take cardboard, sketch the outline, Mark where each bolt goes, cut a slot, put every bolt in the cardboard.
Keep your sealing washers with the bolts .

When replacing the bolts It's usually better not to use a torque wrench as these threads can be easily damaged which leads to major problems, just use a small wrench or 1/4 inch drive socket and just snug them ,if they weep you can go back and gently tighten them a bit more.

Get your Approved semiliquid gasket sealer thin and even as possible.
Note there is a piece of the cover that doesn't mate to the head near the
Bathtub of oil for the cam.
Don't try to land the bolts quickly.
It's okay to run the pattern four or five times.
It's harder to fix stripped threads than a drip.
Don't forget to have the center bolt already in.
And I forget what to do with the upside down one.
