Noob to it all
03/17/17 at 12:40:51

Hello! My name is Ryan Im from the Cleveland area of Ohio. I just bought a 2001 Savage. Its kinda beat up and I plan on doing some fixes on it to get back to lookin perdy.  This is my first bike and at the end of the month I take my drivers safety course and test for my license. I'm absolutely new to all of this but beyond excited. Im not that mechanically inclined I have put a a lift on a jeep and do easy maintenance.

Is there anything on the bike that I should check over or know about before I take it riding? Ive ordered new turn signals, mirrors, and that thing that makes your brake blink. Ill post some pics when I figure it out.

Looking forward to it all!

Thanks

How many miles are on it.  There are a few thing you need to look for, but they are mostly reliable.

I'm in the Cleveland area as well and I have a lot of parts listed in the classified on here.  Things like seats, fenders, tank, grips, forks, etc.

Welcome to motorcycling. How 'bout some photos of the bike. That might get some questions and comments going.

Im just opened an imgur account and am uploading some pics.

The bike has 13,xxx miles, Im pretty sure its missing the right hand side battery cover?, right side cover/panel thingy, has a pretty big tank dent, some chips and rust, a bent front left peg, missing rear passenger peg(wont need), missing the rear right blinker, hole in the brake light cover, and missing the fork keys..  It runs tho lol.

I ordered all new blinkers, the thing that makes your brake blink when applied, new mirrors, gunmetal plasti dip, dent puller from harbor freight, and 4 replacemnt keys.

The pegs are too bent, those can be straightened.
Take them off, remove the rubber, abuse with your favorite.

That's enough miles to be time to check the cam chain.

This is my first bike and at the end of the month I take my drivers safety course and test for my license.

If you dive into making it all pretty and drop it you'll be unhappy.
Recommend you get it ready to ride, enjoy the summer, see how it goes. The cam chain is not something to trifle with. And you have no idea if the owner adjusted the valves.

Before you pull the plug, check out the cavity it sits in.  Crud can get in and fall into the cylinder.
Before you pull the tank, prepare a place to set it down and not mess up the speedometer cable.
You should just ditch the petcock and put the Yamaha Raptor petcock on it.
Not some$12.00 Chinese knockoff, though.
Genuine Yamaha part.

Great first bike. A first bike will:

- Get dropped at a stop sign
- Will fall over in your driveway
- Will get knocked over by the kids
- Will get hit by your wife's car

The other thing I like about this bike, you will learn how to work on it - because it needs work. Things like foot pegs and directionals are available because so many of these bikes get turned into something else. For now, focus on getting safe to ride (brakes, tires, lighting), able to pass inspection, and mechanically sound (clean carb, timing chain, oil change...).
