I read a really good case that .22 autos are the best self defense weapon. This guy did research for a over a year on something like 8000 shootings over previous 15 years and the most common calibers used were 9 mm and .22. According to this article, .22 autos were far more effective because the accuracy was far higher and multiple rounds hit the target. His theory, which makes sense to me, is because of no recoil, you can put 5 or 10 rounds on target where you have to practice regularly to be able to make that 2nd 9mm hit your target. His finding was the 2nd shot (and subsequent shots) were critical in many cases. Think about it, if you don't shoot often, the heavy recoil of a 9mm or .45 means if you don't hit the first time, you're increasing unlikely to hit at all.
Maybe the best self defense is the KelTec 30 shot .22 magnum auto. Don't discount.22 magnum, I've got a .22 mag revolver and it's potent.
