Camchain tensioner spring

I have seen mention somewhere on this forum of people modifying the spring in the camchain tensioner. The only modifications would either be replacing or shortening the spring. Exactly what are you guys up to here and has it been a success? Early Jap bikes I have owned (CB 77) had a manual tensioner that you loosened every 2000 miles to let the spring take up the slack in the camchain. It was then locked again to prevent any further movement in the tensioner until the next service. This would be ideal for the Savage (but unfortunately not really practical) and prevent the constant incremental tightening of the chain which may be the reason the chain stretches prematurely? So perhaps the mods you guys are making to the spring go some way to addressing the problem?
