inspection cap leak.
05/02/16 at 16:32:26

I went to dealer to get inspection cover gasket.. Front top of engine seems to be leaking. Dealer said gasket is discontinued... "My question is" will red RTV over the gasket do the job. Or just RTV inplace of old gasket.

Pull the cap.
See what the oring looks like.
I have a problem believing that a part, IN PRODUCTION, isn't available.
But, if you didn't pinch it, you should be able to clean the cap up and lay a bead of rtv in the groove, let it set up good, clean up the oring, lay it in. If it has a nick in it, put rtv on it, lay that side in the groove, and, if the oring is protruding from the cap , put it on.
Don't get horsey with the bolts.

Clean everything up.
Lay the oring in the groove, it should stick up past the cap.
You can flip it over.
Still not sure?
Lay a bead in the groove.
You can lay the oring in, and level up the rtv.
Might wanna wait a day, in a warm place.
I think you can get that part. They still build the bike.

Are you talking about part #39? I only used a 2009 because that's what one of mine is.

Valve cover O-rings are -139, fits tight to the outside.
-138 might fit too, but the -139 are self retaining and what I had access too.

But also check the other bolts on the cover, some have a sealing washer.
Those have some oil pressure under them.

The O-ring gets a lot of heat, and over time they get stiff and shrink.....time to put on a new one.  The new one will be round, and it takes a little bit of care to get it in the oval shape for the first time.

Suzuki still makes and sells the part...give your parts guy a "dope slap" and this part number.....09280-60004.

Bingo
this reminds me of a buddy of mine, had a 1976 Pontiac Catalina
the flasher unit went out, and he went to buy a new one
Parts idiot at Auto Zone:"they don't make it anymore, it's too old"
Me "do they still make one for my 1985 Chevy Caprice?" (this was 1992)
Parts idiot "oh yeah those are still in production"
Me "It's the same effin part, you effin moron" To manager, "Why do you have this idiot who knows less about cars than your customers working here, don't ya'll have some sort of knowledge requirement?"
Deer in headlights look from manager
Me "I see"
