Different cylinder head bolts on later s40?
04/18/16 at 17:30:09

Just working through the first service on my wife's 2015 s40, using the manual found on this site.  One of the checks is for the tightness of the cylinder head bolts.  The picture in the manual doesn't look much like the head on this bike.  After removing the chrome covers (L and R) The left side has two quite large bolts sunk deep down but nothing equivalent on the right side just a bunch of 10mm bolts.  Am I missing something?

That's a cover,... most head bolts are under it... Cool

Most of us don't mess with the head bolts unless there's a problem...

Too much bother.... Grin

I have a 2014 S40 and I haven't touched the cylinder head bolts, nor do I intend to. 2500 miles thus far.

IMHO removing the cylinder head cover just to torque the head bolts is insanity. Disturb the camshaft???? Not me!  Smiley

Torquing those bolts requires loosening, cleaning, first.
There's no reason to risk the trouble.
Why that is a
Recommended maintenance step
is beyond me. Unless they thought it would be a money maker for the shop.

My local Suzuki shop wanted $350 to do the first service!

I don't think so! To basically change the oil and not much else, except mess up the camshaft bearings. :'(

Norm,

Most of the dealers don't mess up the camshaft bearings, because they don't take anything apart on the S40 except the oil filter.

Their idea of checking the valve adjustment is done with their ear in a matter of seconds.

The most expensive oil change you will ever get on an S40 is the one the dealer will do at 600 miles.....You will be praying that they don't get the oil filter on backwards.

Kenny G,

I only have another month of warranty to go so then I won't care any more. My only concern really, is an expensive repair that might crop up but judging from the way it is running that is not going to happen Grin

Anyway, I don't think Suzuki would deny coverage just because I didn't have the first service performed by them.

The camshaft bearings are in the same drawer as the Detroit Diesel spark plugs.

Yep Ok - I see...
For the record the valve clearances were spot on, the plug looked a little weak but nothing serious, everything else was good.  The only needed adjustment was the drive belt.  BTW I like the little tensioner tool - very nice!  The battery was fine, my only criticism is the crappy "tool box" its impossible to get the "tools" back in with the plastic bag!

Unfortunately....the drive belt tool is not a good way to adjust the belt.  It makes the belt too tight....it is better to use the "TWIST" method.
