10/05/15 at 00:32:33

Hello i need to change fork oil how much do I put in my bike is a 2005 that was in a accident so I got a used set from eBay but when they shipped them they drained the oil and took out spacers so they could get cheaper shipping the forks seem to be in good shape seals look good so I am thinking just refill from the top and install but I don't know how much the factory recommends

15oz each. With the spring out and the tube at the bottom of the stroke you should be able to measure 75mm between the top of the oil and the top of the fork tube.

If you don't care about getting it right, it can be done with the forks attached. If your goal is to get it right...

1) remove the forks.
2) completely drain the forks of the old oil. You will need to pump them (while upside down) to clear the oil from the damping rod.
3) with the fork standing vertical, add the required oil to achieve the recommended 75mm gap.

Thanks Gary, I was thinking I could pump the oil out while on the bike. Brain Fart I guess, or trying to be LAZY.

Fork removal takes just a few minutes. Get a 6x6 and a few 2x4's to make a poor man's bike stand then...

- Remove brake caliper from its mount (don't let it hang by the hose)
- Remove the front wheel
- Loosen the fork cap
- Loosen the lower triple clamp bolt and turn signal mount
- Remove fork cap and wiggle the fork with a down motion until it clears the lower clamp.

That's a fat screw up under the turn signal.  Not a #2 Philips.

Yes, that does look ugly. I usually see used/worn old oil looking gray - not black.

Pump 'em good to expel the old oil.

Compressed the shocks for a few minutes to get all I could then let them sit for a few hours upside down.

refilled them and reinstalled. Went for a ride and WOW  Shocked
what a difference.

Thanks all  Smiley
