Bogging at higher rpms
07/08/15 at 12:55:19

I have a savage 650. Carbs have been gone through. Bike takes off well enough but towards higher rpms (not sure exactly since theres no tach) it bogs almost sounds like its hitting the rev limiter. Everything is stock.

Ill have to look again at the jetting, I do remember the main jet had the first two number pretty worn. NO mods. everything is stock as far as I know. mileage is low. Not sure on the spacer. Since it seems to be doing it past 1/2 throttle probably around 3/4-full I'm assuming the needle but I don't know much about the savage.

I'd guess petcock.
But , first, I'd like details.
Year model, miles,
Has it been doing this?
How much riding has this rider done On This Bike?

1996 LS650, 15k miles. Just got the bike, back firing when you let off the throttle all the way. Any more than half throttle it bogs

Years say petcock, at least. Vacuum hose to petcock, check for fuel, it's old, might be cracking at an end.
Dude, I hate to tell ya, but that mileage is scary close to cam chain tensioner checking.

Slide could be sticking,

Same problem on my 2005, replaced the petcock with the raptor, problem solved.  Honestly, i did not even take the time to check it.  The $22 is worth more than the time it takes to verify it is crapola.
Strange part was that it had some paint from the bike that was loose inside the tank that had to be flushed out.

Petcock looks good. Fuel drains out. Ill recheck the vacuum line but that looks good as well. Carb slide not sticking but it does look a bit worn. Any way to test the petcock? What if I just plug the vacuum nipple on the carb and petcock?

Try setting the petcock on prime and riding it that way, see if the problem persists
If so, time for the Raptor petty (the real one, not a china knock off)

When you say a raptor petcock is that a brand/product name or the atv?

It's the petcock for a Yamaha Raptor 660
it's a direct bolt on that's pure mechanical, not vacuum operated, and is 1000x more reliable than the crappy vacuum petcock Suzuki saddled the Savage / S40 with
remember to plug the vacuum port on the carb if you changeover

Ok just replaced the petcock and I'm still having a bogging issue. Im going to go through the carb again just in case.

What else could it be? Main jet is 145 other is 52.5 which I believe were stock for this year.

You need to look at the cam chain.

care to elaborate? As in why the cam chain needs to be looked at and why it would cause this issue?

It won't cause this problem, but at fifteen thousand miles the tensioner may be ready to destroy your engine. Then, bogging at high RPM becomes a non issue.
