Speedometer housing squeak: faster better cheaper?

I was about to go nuts from it.

After doing archaeology in the archives, I found solutions to that infernal screeching from the instrument cluster. Went and got some fuel line to cut up to replace the springs, etc.

Got home and the fuel line was too small to fit over the 3 mounting studs. But by then I was in and could see what was doing the screeching: the dry, corroded studs scraping on the three mounting tabs on the tank.

Try what I did next, works great, ends the noise:

Pull the tank, but first drain enough gas to set the tank on its rear end mounts with the underside facing you, leaned on something, without gas coming out the filler cap.

Remove the 8mm nuts, washers and springs.

Pull the instrument cluster out.

Clean the studs with emery paper or something.

Stretch the soft, POS springs about 50%, pulling with two needle nose pliers.

Slather everything: the three studs, springs, washers and mounting tabs on the tank with heavy wheel bearing grease.

Put it back together. The washers go between the springs and the nuts.

Reconnect the mult plug, reinstall the speedo cable, mount the tank, reconnect the fuel line. Boy that's easy with the Raptor valve on there! Pour the gas back in.

Wipe off the tank and put some carnuba wax on it, because you got grease all over the tank, din't cha? ;^)

The screeching noise is gone. You can hear the speedo cable whirring gently down there. Nice.

While you're at it, lube the cable just for grins and giggles.
