Posts: 138 Spring, TX Gender:	Harley shocks, bushings - called Progressive 03/02/15 at 16:16:45 Found some Progressive 'Harley' shocks, 412-4011, 11.5". and I need bushings and sleeves to install them. Would like to know if I can use the existing S40 bushings and sleeves before I start taking things apart. Didn't see it in the rear suspension tech section. Or what specific do I need to buy for the install? thanks.

Reply #1 - 03/02/15 at 18:18:38 I believe the bushings you need are 14mm - if the Progressive shocks are new they normally come with the bushings. The stock shocks don't have any sleeves or bushings that will fit the Progressive shocks.

Reply #2 - 03/02/15 at 20:11:41 stock harley shocks have an ID of 5/8 and are bushed to 1/2" the stock savage shocks have an ID of 14mm or about 9/16" you can drill out the bushings that come with the shocks to 14mm or progressive has a metric bushing kit.

I had to discard. I need new something. 'Bubba' what kind of tubing would you use? 'Zipidachimp' what bushings did you use and then shim?

I tried using the stock bushings but it didn't work.
Went to a 'metal supermarket' and bought a 14mm ID tube with thin walls(steel). Hacked off a bit the length of the bushing, it would not fit the new shocks (too large).. Put the pipe bit in a vise, cut off about 1/3 of the circumference lengthwise so that I now had a piece that looks like the letter 'C', tapped it onto the shock stud, slid the new shock over it and 'bingo' fits like a glove. used 'never seez' so I could get it off when needed. Repeated this for the remaining 3 bushings, shocks are nice and tight but can be removed when needed. ps: don't get 'neverseez on the stud threads! Cool

pps: I'm a bit of a wiz with a hacksaw!!! Grin

Not sure I'm being clear. I need both the rubber cushion donut things and the metal tube pieces that go inside them. I think. If I order something, changes are I'll get sent the wrong things and they won't fit. Probably have to measure and do a drawing of what I need and order them specifically.

The shims I made go inside the steel tube that is inside the shock bushing. that's the reason for the 'neverseez'. Far less painful than ordering something that may not work, or may be misunderstood. Also, I did all of it in less than 90 minutes. Cool

Correction: changed 'bushing' to 'sleeve'.

Just so there's no misunderstanding, the new shock sleeves were larger than 14mm, not smaller, and the shims supplied did not work on the s40 studs. That's why I made my own.
My new shocks were intended for a harley. Drilling anything out was never an option.

I need new rubber bushings of OD that fit inside the shock ends with ID for pieces of metal tubing that fit around the bike bolts, and washers on the outsides to space the shocks to fit the bike.

Reply #11 - 03/08/15 at 23:31:13 'sleeve' is the word I was missing: the progressive sleeves are too large, which is why i made my own. also, the bushings in the suzuki shocks won't fit the progressive shocks, and they are a bugger to get out. making your own sleeve 'shim' may be the only answer, if you cannot return them.

They make bushing kits for the S50 Intruder [$38 apx shipped]that will fit into my shocks but nothing for an S40. Will bushings and sleeves for an Intruder [S50] fit on my S40? thanks.

Any luck with this? i believer the intruder shocks are a direct swap for the s40 which means they use the same size bushings. Ive got a pair of progressives I ordered "for an intruder" still in the box with a small bag of extra bushings. I'm guessing either the ones already in the shocks or one of the bagged ones are meant to work.
