New to the board
02/26/15 at 13:05:41

Hello everyone 1st post just wanted to say hello.
My name is Rylee I'm from Long Beach, CA and I own a 96 savage. The bike is about 80% done. It has a RYCA bobber kit on it, around 18k miles and I'm the 4th owner. Previous 2 only owned it for a short amount of time and as the build process has progressed I've noticed very poor upkeep. I'm posting from my phone so as soon as I'm at a laptop I'll post some pics of her current state.

Be aware that they need to have the cam chain tensioner checked out . What's the mileage?

I've had a chance to browse the board a bit and have seen the cam chain tensioner verslavy makes. I've actually book marked the thread. 1st oil change I did just under a quart came out so I'm gonna crack it open and check soon as I have a chance. I'm not riding it as of yet other then a few puts around the neighborhood to check things. I'm sure with the poor upkeep and current mileage status it's ready to be changed. I did notice on 1 particular spin an almost harmonic noise of a metallic origin like two metal objects vibrating in a bowl. Only seemed to do it under load but there was no vibration in my pegs or weird vibration as I put my heels against the engine. Hopefully with my work schedule being so heavy right now I get some free time to actually work on her.

I noticed your in the LA area. I'm in Long Beach so when it comes time to replace the tensioner which I'm sure is gonna be when I crack it open I'm gonna be calling on you and save some shipping costs.

Nice! I use to be one of those hardcore cafe guys. Had a 67 triumph boneville t120 finally got fed up with British bikes and all the constant wrenching so I found the 1st bike I ever sat on. Dad had an 88 savage brand new from the dealer and at 13 years old I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Started my love for 2 wheels and nearly 20 years later I've come full circle and own 1

I listened to a few of the posts that had tensioner gone bad noises and though I'm not at a full on rattle yet I'm gonna go ahead and say that's it. Since I haven't reached 10 posts I can't PM you yet Verslagen1 but I'm definitely gonna need your tensioner so let me know what I need to do to make it happen. Wednesday is my only real day to work on the bike without being hampered by honey do's or kids so the sooner the better I'd like to start riding her on a regular basis. Feel free to PM me with any and all details on how to acquire the parts from you.

IIRC,we've seen One tensioner spit its guts and NOT kill the motor. Every other one was a fatality. I would not start it again until I Knew that it was safe.

When you put your new cam-chain or versey in , remember there is no need for the tentioner spring to be near as strong as the factory has it.   The plunger has teeth on it so it can't back-up.  I'm using a spring about 1/3 as strong as the original with no problem at all , and expect the chain to last a lot longer because of it .   Wink

and :   Welcome aboard !  Smiley   Hope to meet ya on one of our rides sometime .
