reading that made me sad
the work is beyond my tools / skills / confidence, and it seems my bike is doomed to rapid wear (I do have the 140/90 shinko though, it do help)
the XS100, on the other hand, is already 34 years old, obviously built to last, and for the interstate
so it see,s that while I love the S40, I better plan on retaining the XS1100
Maybe next time I'll get a more modern bike
Vstars have hydraulic valves, no adjustments
I plan on keeping the S40 for my wife to learn how to ride, and use as a starter bike. I'm already wanting a 2nd bike though, the Yamaha FZ-07. It's a twin cyl 700 and comes in at an MSRP of $6990.
I think it's a bit out of my skill level too, but I'll probably still give it my best shot. I think it would be well worth it to drop the RPMs down and have a top speed of over 100. I won't...ever um...go over 100
No, none of us EVER go over 100, even with a bike that will

What pointed me toward Sportsters was ; air cooled, 568lbs, one carb, belt drive, 50mpg, and Hydraulic valve adjusters. That no rattle noise is Good !
2004 went rubber mount motor, 2007 went fuel injected --- the carb was easier on fuel (my first one did 55-58mpg). Older than 04 models will Vibrate your rear-end off !

Lancer
I'm glad your keeping up with this post .
I'm planning on the Texas ride and the NC. rides both this year , hope you are too. Our local CMA group has lots of events on the calendar this year but not very many rides just for the sake of ridding. I Hope your health is holding up for ya and you can get some ridding in this year too. Fact is , I was hoping to get out you way sometime this summer for a day ride (well three day on my part).
You still ridding the S-40 and the Sportster too? Switching back and forth between them always adds a couple of careful miles to my day.

I had a chance at a Sporty, and at a good price (for a sporty) but had a chance at a Ranger at the same time and needed the truck more (gotta have a tow vehicle when the bike breaks down
maybe I'll have the opportunity again one day
sounds like I would want a 2004-2006 model
still would like full fenders though, which points elsewhere than the sporty I think

I pulled out my 1200C Handy-dandy Owners Manual and it says the the shipping wt. from the factory is 575 lbs., so that is dry weight.
Porky little thing isn't it ? But then, if you need to push it anywhere it becomes evident very quickly. YEP. BREATHING HARD. HEART BEATS FAST. GETTING LIGHT HEADED. Stuff like that.
Fixin to pull the top off the Savage finally and search out the engine knock from back when. We are living back on the farm again and I have everything here in one place and plenty of room and more time.
I need it for June.

took my XS1100 out today, made the mistake of visiting a freing with a gravel driveway at a slight downslope, and the other mistake of not leaving my self turnaround room
600lbs is one thing, 600 lbs and TALL is another
I had to dismount and push it backward to get it out of the lee of the house

Lancer your right ! I got my book out and looked ; 568/257.6- LBS/KG IN THE 07 SERVICE MANUAL. So, something else is 490lbs but now I don't know what ?
Sorry to hear about one of your Savages being sick
, hope its an easy fix for ya !
And yea I don't want to push the Sportster very far or fast.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.
