Well....anything beyond the 3rd place Savage is beyond the "Beginner" rider and should be a bike for someone that has ridden their first bike for a while.

The Los Angeles Times lady who reviewed the RYCA CS-1 called the stock S40 a "Street Legal Eyesore".

My favorite line in the whole article was the last line regarding the Indian Scout (Which I'm itching at throwing a leg over as a step up from the S40) (Even references the S40, stating that it's seat height is 2 inches lower than the S40)

Well, if the Scout and the Triumph belong on that list, then this surely does.

" It features a six speed transmission with Kawasaki’s Positive Neutral Finder, “which allows you to simply upshift from first when stopped to select neutral.”

Er, isn't that how you select neutral on most bikes? Wink

Most people think the Savage or S40 is a Sportster anyway and since the Sportster has always been considered to be one of the best looking bikes ever, who cares what this bum writes!

Bot, it just means they have never seen yours. Cool

Maybe the bike as a whole is ugly, but it looks really good from the rear and that is all most other cruiser riders ever see as it leaves them behind at the stop light, at least for the first 100 yards or so.

Good hunting

Seems not a week goes by that I don't get a look and question about my bike as I sit on the ferry.
Factor in I am grouped with BMW, Harley's, etc, my favorite thing to share with the inquisitor is that you can go in to a dealer, buy a brand spanking new one off the floor, and still have money left over in your checking account  Grin

That must be it... they don't like it cause they've seen the rear end far too often.   Cool

What???

My Vulcan 800 which they stopped making in 2006 has that feature. When stopped in first gear, pulling the shifter up takes you to neutral and blocks you from continuing up into 2nd gear.

Well, the author of this article had good sense in awarding the S40 third place. As I've pointed out in other posts, in my country it would appear to be seen as very much a learners bike. I'm very satisfied and really wouldn't change. A white Yamaha Bolt would be nice, but I don't want to pay the bill and I don't like digital instrumentation.

I do not know how they rated a bike as "fit" or "ideal" for beginners.

However, I'm also aware that many models available in Europe may not be available in the USA.

That said, I would have expected to see a few other bikes...

- Honda CB 500 (500cc twin) and its Kawasaki cousin,

- Honda Shadow 750 and Yamaha Star 650,

- Kawasaki W-800 (do you still have the 650?)

- BMW 650 single,

- Moto Guzzi V7 (possibly the tamest of the lot, yet if you come to like it come 30 years you'll still be riding it!)

- Models quite possibly not available in the US? Aprilia Mana, an 800cc V-twin with CVT transmission (years before Honda "invented it"!)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aprilia_Mana_850

In Europe, ANY beginner MUST spend the first three years riding nothing more powerful than 48hp / 35 KW.

RayDawg.  Just curious since I took the ferry from Cathlamet back to the Oregon side.  Same ferry?
