I need help identifying a part!

I am new to this and bought an 07 boulevard s40. I went to change the oil and not paying attention I took this bolt/plug out thinking it was the oil drain plug and it wasn't. Some type of oil came out of it but not a whole lot and I have no idea what it is, it is located on the front right of the crankcase under where the oil fill plug is. Does anyone know what is? Here is a picture, I am hesitant to drive the bike without putting more fluid back in. It is a silver 17mm bolt

I think, and I could be wrong(some say it has happened before), that is an oil plug for an optional oil cooler that this bike does not have. There should be another plug somewhere up front and they act as the inlet and outlet for oil should an external oil cooler ever be needed/desired.

Just continue with the oil change as normal and you will be fine.

No it is not an optional cooling port.

It is a bolt that blocks off the access point where the oil passages were drilled when the engine block was machined.

Get an owners manual or Clymers, or use the Index in the Tech Section to walk you through and oil and filter change. Don't just blindly start taking things off. Look in this index, you can find a thread on how to find the oil drain plug, and also on how to do an oil change.

The two bolt hose that "could" be used for an oil cooler are shown in this link:

However - you have to block off the passage in the block between the two holes if you want all the oil going to the cooler.

An oil cooler is of debatable value on the Savage.....discussed at length in other treads.

Reply #5 - 09/03/14 at 15:13:00 Dave, I have a cyclmers and I know how to change the oil I was just in a hurry it was about 1 in the morning and wasn't thinking. That's the location on my last bike. But do I need to replace any oils that were in it? Or just screw it back in and go?

Reply #6 - 09/03/14 at 15:23:05 That port is termed the oil pressure test port. It's fed directly from the oil pressure pump. whatever oil leaked outta there will be refilled once you change the oil.
