Oil Pump Drive gear?

OK, on the 'cheep' 97.  Clutch side cover off.
Got it cheep, because, oil over lower part of engine,
and oil, 'spray', back of that. and noise that, 'sounded like',  CCT problems. Found loose header bolts, loose, engine mounting bolt,
(top foot peg bolt), loose, front head bolt, under header attachment.

CCT is about 17mm out, Think will replace. (2 hole one)
(Decide when new gaskets get here)

So I could not figure what the, 'noise' was I was hearing.
(After seeing the CCT, still doing it's job)

The only thing, that moves, wobbles, is the gear that drives the oil pump.

I have searched, and found about failures, due to basically incorrect assembly. I Don't think this is the case, 6500 miles, PO to the PO, was, 'supposedly', a lade who drove very little.
(Which brings more proof that, 'numbers of event', vs, 'miles driven per event', cause much more wear.)
Don't know what kind of oil the PO & PO used.
Do know it was very overfull, and Black, I Mean BLACK!

Anyway, on to the Oil Pump gear.  Nothing I have read, tells me how much, 'play', is allowed in that gear.

Here is what:
The gear looks properly installed, the pin is on the shaft, the circle clip is on the end. Gear teeth look good. And cannot, 'disengage', it from it's gearing.

However, can move the, 'shaft' the gear is on, in and out, about 1/32".
Also, the gear, on the shaft, 'wobbles', a bit.  32/64th ?
But the shaft, does not move, up and down, only in and out.
(Is that the noise)

Now this checking is done with Only the cover removed,
a good flashlight, and a dental pick, (moving it).
While on my knees, bent over.
(Real Hard to drink beer this way!!!)

So, what do you suggest I do?
1. Put it together, and not worry.
2. Put it together, ride it some, sell it in the Spring.
3. Do more tear down, (and fix what needs to be)
4. Start selling parts.

Have  about 760 in it so far.
(650  bike / 60 title / 50 Pedcock,gaskets, misc)

Now if was black, would probably start selling parts.
But, is is  RED !  Grin

I got 1/16" in and out
and 1/64" wobble.

BTW, 32/64th is 1/2"... did you really measure that much?   Huh
Then I'd replace the oil pump if that is shaft related or the gear if it's just the gear.

It's just don't taste right through a straw.

Yes 32/64 is = 1/2

What Information I meant to impart was;
1/32 tp 1/64"  wobble.
Which is just a WAG, from my finger moving it.

If it were me,... and I'm cheap and lazy... I'd just put it together...

Past history says, we don't have much oil pump failures...
.. and I sure wouldn't want to go in there that deep...
JMHO...

Ohh,... I just the what the straw is for... Roll Eyes...
