Lets talk "Air Filter Mods"

I see a bunch of you have gone with a K&N 1250 Cone filter.
I like that and I'm sure that it's a well noted improvement.
What I am curious about is not only what filters have been used but also visual improvements.

I thought I has seen someone with a cone filter sort of extended out and downward and sticking out of the side of the bike a bit. How is that done? Are there some sort of extensions that can be purchased? Is it a total custom job?

Has anyone used a Pancake side mount type filter?

What if any pit falls are there to air flowing through angles in an enclosed pipe to the carb?

Other thoughts and ideas are welcome.

What are the parts called? @Thumperclone By desnorkeled you you mean that you remove the feeder tube that previously went to the air box and just pop the filter right on to the carb?

I read in a thread somewhere on hear that having some kind of straight path before entering the head was good to optimize flow. I ultimately modified the stock intake throat so that I could clamp my K&N to it. It seems to work well, plus the position gives it a little protection from water on the road.

I like the aesthetics of it, and that's what counts. Wink

The rest of the box is left stock, with a factory style fit K&N flat filter. "K&N-esque" cone filters from any source are garbage. Even properly oiled they let large debris into the carburetor.

My experience. First, read a bit on intake theory, unless this is about looks more than high-performance. I learned the volume between filter surface and carb should be equal or greater than the jug volume. Also,in my opinion, the cost and all considered, the k/n just wasn't all that great. It's okay, but borderline worth it.I modified the air box to increase the volume.good luck, whichever way you go.

Justin by chance did you document this process? This sounds like a good option to go towards. Do you feel that the bike became more responsive or anything there of?

I had first considered drilling holes in the side of the box in the plastic removable cover. Then I was going to just drop in a k&n.

AS far as being High performance. There's no LS650 drag circuit here Shocked

So I guess it's for looks and a bit more power. I'm not going to Dyno test it or anything like that.

I was wondering if there was any major pit falls that I needed to avoid while doing this.

I have a vision. I don't know how it ends. But I'm psyched about the journey. Grin

Oh, one more question... what is the Jug volume? Is that the displacement?

Hi, I also have a 'vision' as regards the Savage , sadly unlike yourself i haven't managed to find one at the right price/locality (in UK) but this forum is great for allsorts of tried and tested info, this bike has a bit of a cult following as it seems to be so easy to modify to personal needs. Take a few evenings to read through this helpful forum and associated links and absorb, while i still try and envisage that dream...

Jug volume is 652cc as standard, this is the displacement of the cylinder
