Turning the engine counter clockwise, damage?
11/13/13 at 11:43:51

Panic!   Embarrassed
I think that i have by accident been turning the engine counter clockwise when searching for TDC (maybe one turn or so). Does anybody know if this will hurt the engine (change the timing or so) on the Savage?

dam right you should panic.

pre'95's will engage the starter clutch.  driven hard enough will bust teeth, or bosses.

post '95's you'll hear a loud twang if you go far enough.  but no damage will occur.

going backwards you accumulate the backlash in the opposite direction, so you might not be on TDC.  And if you're using the intake valves closing to find the correct TDC you'll definitely end up on the wrong TDC.  This TDC is generally looser so you'll end up with a bad adjustment.

Well my bike is modell 97, and no strange sounds occured.
F....cuk, so now i either have to hope that the timing is not affected or remove the chain and reset, or is there any other way?

If you were turning the engine over slowly with a wrench.....I doubt that it broke anything.  It would engage the starter on pre or post 95 bikes, and turn the starter over backwards......but I really can't see that it would damage or break anything.  It would cause the cam chain to drive the cam backwards.....and as Verslagen has stated it will probably not show the cam mark in the correct place......but close enough for adjusting valve clearances.

Many engines turn over backwards when shut down....and they don't suffer damage.  The pre-95 Savages had an issue because the engine could kick back quickly and hard (big single), and it would exert excess pressure on the intermediate gears and shafts.  They fixed this after 95 with a torque limiter......but this torque limiter does nothing when you are turning the engine over slowlyl.

Don't sweat it this time....but always turn the engine the same way that your wheels rotate.  Just turn the engine over forward and check the timing....I bet everything is fine.

Now iam really confused, the clymer manual states "rotate the engine clockwise as viewed from the left side". That would be the opposite direction of wheel rotation  Huh  ??
And that would then mean that i have rotated the wrong way instead Sad

Yep.....You found one of the errors in the Clymers Manual.

Guys,.. am I confused or you?...
He said he was going counter-clockwise... that's the correct direction...
Everything is fine...

When I got my bike and start to service it I did turn as the book says. No problem at all. I did think about why turn wrong way but followed the book.
I check the piston from spark plug hole, the valve if they were at right position. And made the adjust.
Never heard of a motor that falls i pieces if turned wrong way. The chain can't jump because of that.

well... first i turned it the counter clockwise, then when I was reading Clymers I changed direction and turned it several times the "right" way  Embarrassed

Approaching TDC from the wrong direction, might make a slight difference, depending on how much stretch is on the camchain... but, if you had gotten the the timing mark 180' off, you would have caught valves under spring pressure and impossible to get a feeler gauge on...

Just go ahead and line up the mark turning CCW on the cycle that lets you feel the intake valves close and double check the gap at that point...
No damage... it'll be fine...
Wink...

Remember,... the sequence of a combustion cycle is "suck, squish, bang, blow", that's "intake, compression, spark, exhaust"... you want to check the valves at the compression cycle when all the valves are closed... that is why you turn CCW and feel for the intake valves to come back up. Once they do, you know you are on the compression cycle...
Strange,... but I've had a day of confusion personally myself... must be some cosmic alignment messing with us today...

Ok, thank you!
Just another question; at the moment my head cover is of, and iam thinking that if I turn the motor around until the timing mark at the crankcase is aligned and also the timing marks at the camshaft is aligned with the lobes facing downwards, then i must be at TDC???
By rotating in the right direction a couple of rotations any evetually slack to the camchain would go back to normal i guess.

Wait until you put the cover back on before turning the engine...
The cover also holds the cam in place...(if I'm remembering correctly)...

Once you seal it back up,.. recheck the valve gap...
