Approaching TDC from the wrong direction, might make a slight difference, depending on how much stretch is on the camchain... but, if you had gotten the the timing mark 180' off, you would have caught valves under spring pressure and impossible to get a feeler gauge on...
Just go ahead and line up the mark turning CCW on the cycle that lets you feel the intake valves close and double check the gap at that point...
No damage... it'll be fine...

Remember,... the sequence of a combustion cycle is "suck, squish, bang, blow", that's "intake, compression, spark, exhaust"... you want to check the valves at the compression cycle when all the valves are closed... that is why you turn CCW and feel for the intake valves to come back up. Once they do, you know you are on the compression cycle...
Strange,... but I've had a day of confusion personally myself... must be some cosmic alignment messing with us today...
