Ignitor(CID black box)resistor replacement help
10/19/13 at 13:33:10

Hey, I have been having problems with my savage for a while, randomly shutting off and strange idle issues, until finally no spark at all. We'll today I finally found the source to my problems, the ignitor box leaked causing the two resistors on the bottom to corrode. I noticed one resistors leg ad broken off, so I bypassed the resistor with a blob of solder. Started it up an ran like dream, all problems with spark and idle are now corrected. My question is, will my bypassing the resistor cause any problems, second does anyone know the ohm value of those things (so badly corroded I can't read the rings) and where I can get some. Or do I need to replace to box thanks....in the pics the resistors are on the top left

Thanks, I'm still having a hard time making out the rings on those two. Once I figure it out I can run over to radio shack and get them. I'm thinking 10ohms

You should measure the output voltage at idle and throughout the rev range up to 5k or so... (from the battery terminals)...
If it ever goes below 13.2v or above 14.6v... it'll either toast yer' battery, or fry your stator... (those numbers are a little looser than spec. to account for the missing resistor)...13.4 to 14.5 would be better...

I would like to just replace those two, I just bought a 500 assorted pack of resistors I know I have the right one in there, I can solder it in. I just need someone who has an open ignitor for my year range (1986) that can tell me the number and color of bars on those two resistors.

Found a better picture, I see gold, red, blue clearly but can't tell if there is another ring under the sealer.

Looks like enough of the resistor is there. Use an ohm meter and read it.
Looks like you bought 1/4 watt resistors. Ones on the board look like 2 watt or bigger. New ones won't last long.
Old TV tech trick.....resistor so burned you had no clue what it was. When you found what went bad to cause problem, and did not know resistor value, wire i a meg ohm rheostat and slowly reduce resistance until it came on. Take rheostat out, measure it, solder in closest value resistor. Fixed

Um, just hitting the post and reading in case something like this would happen to me.
But are the Ignitors different on different years? those 3 pics look different from each other.
You should figure out whats burning it out before you buy another ignitor , not sure if this helps.
