I Found a Hole in my Engine....WTH?

Hello all,

Puttering around the bike today and noticed this:

Some wise-acre put a hole in my engine, then filled it with white silicone goo!

Now, I bought this bike used when it had only 50 miles on it.  The original owner rode it once and decided that she didn't like the bike.  After that, it sat neglected in a shed in the hot Houston sun for a year before I found it.  I don't suspect that she had anything to do with this mysterious hole.....

No, this tomfoolery must have happened at the factory, or the selling dealer's!

Any ideas?  Should I be pizzed?

That is the blanked out (plugged) end of a factory drilled oil passage.  The white stuff is factory sealant that was put in the same time the blocker plug was installed.

In short, it is normal, it is stock, it is "the way she be".

I don't have a Savage around any more to check, but I think mine was like that.  I saw a picture in the Clymer manual that appeared to be the same way.  Not sure what it is, but I think it is factory.

Must be a late model thing, mine has always just had a plug and a crisp clear separation line...

It's one of those cross drilled ports thru the cover.
I've thought of pulling the plug and putting a gage there.
but it's smaller then the standard thread size.
and the gage may not fit there.

I notice there are quite a few spots of white paint around the bike and it varies from bike to bike.
These seem to be quality check points and may indicate which inspector looked at the bike.
