I'm trying to get the 4spd model added into the Gearing commander.com database...
Does anybody have a 4spd model owners manual with the gear ratios printed?...
... or any official printing of the ratios?...

I got the numbers from site member 360+... but gear site may require official scan from manual...

official scan?  you mean with a birth mark or something?

here's the data outta the SSM circa 1986

primary reduction 1.888 (68/36)
final reduction 2.956 (68/23)
Low 2.214 (31/14)
2nd 1.500 (27/18)
3rd 1.095 (23/21)
top 0.875 (21/24)

Same numbers I used...

I don't mean to be picky.... it's just Gearcommander's requirement that these numbers be as authenticated as possible...
An official Suzuki printout is best...

360k+ gave me these numbers from a manual...
If they are correct... the 5spd does give a slight gearing advantage... 100 or so lower rpm in top gear...
I can't imagine why Suzuki would add a gear without adding some legs... (it should have been bigger, but maybe that gear wouldn't fit?.. the gap ain't much)...

I read somewhere that Suzuki dealers complained they were having a hard time selling a bike that was only a 4 speed when so many others were 5-6speeds. The 5thh gear was added to make the bike more "marketable". Shocked
Having owned both 4 & 5 speeds, I would prefer a 4 speed any day. The ratio spacing feels so much better than the 4-5 speed split. Huh
A 4 speed with the starter mods would be my choice. Cool

I don't ride any superslabs (fear & common sense)
I rode 46 miles this morning, and I still don't get why anyone would want higher gearing than the 5 sp, when we don't have enuff HP to pull the 5th sp gearing it has now. I just don't get it !
But then,.......I don't have to !

I don't believe it is all that uncommon for bikes/cars not to be able to pull the top gear to the maximum speed.  On racting vehicles they try to have the gearing so that the top gear will reach top speed at the maxium rpms......as that is the fastest approach.  On most street driven vehicles they provide a top gear that is too high of a ratio for maximum speed - but slows the engine speed down for easy cruising.  If the 5 speed model had a 5th gear ratio a bit higher you could cruise a little more peacefully and hopefullly more comfortable and not be turning as many rpms.  You would have to keep the rpms up enough that you were not lugging the engine and creating more engine wear that way......but just a bit more gearing in 5th seems like i would work well.

I remember reading long ago that the low gear ratio is selected to make starting off, with a heavy load and up an incline, reasonably easy. The high gear is selected to put the engine just above its maximum torque at normal highway cruising speeds. That way a slight increase in load, such as a slight upslope, moves the engine toward higher torque and compensates for the increased load with less driver intervention. Intermediate gears are selected to more or less evenly split the difference. As the stock S40 is reported to have highest torque just about 3750 rpm, gearing it to turn about 4000 at 60 mph seems to fit nicely.
