Brake light won't illuminate
02/26/13 at 04:38:24

Hey guys,
I am having a problem with some electrical. When i turn the ignition to the "ON" position the brake light, and the speedometer light will not illuminate. However, the neutral light will illuminate. When I turn the ignition to the "P" parking lights they illuminate correctly. I have worked on it all day yesterday an it kicked my A$$!. Need some help! Any ideas?

The brake light won't come on until you use one of the brakes.

I know why, too.
There's a little flanged bushing made out of nylon or plastic or some other synthetic. I'm willing to bet the head of it snapped off and now when you apply the rear brakes the brake light doesn't come on. It's in the right side (when mounted) foot peg assembly.
The pedal pulls a steel cable for the light switch.
I fixed mine by using a #4 lock washer. Since it was a lock washer it already had a split in it so I tweaked it open, pulled the steel cable through and tweaked it shut.

If you do some searching I believe it was Verslagen who had detailed pictures and I added some fuzzy cell phone camera ones.

I believe he said it only doesn't work with the ignition in the on position, It does work with the ignition in the park position.

I glazed over that part.
Check the bulb. Check to make sure you're getting voltage.

The tail light is wired to a different tap on the ignition switch...
So that,... if you turn the key counter-clockwise, it taps only the tail light... if you turn the key clockwise, it will tap both, the ignition and other electrics, and the tail light,,,
It sounds like the switch is bad or dirty....
I don't know if you can get in there to clean it...
... but,... on my bike, I hated that "parking light" option, because I would over shoot the off position and accidentally turn the parking light on...
SO, I bypassed it...
I just cut the tailight wire at the switch, and spliced it to the ignition tap...

I think this would fix your problem... (if you don't care about losing the parking light option)...
(To find out, if this will fix it... just run a jumper from the tail light tap to the ignition tap)...

If I remember correctly, in the park position the brake light comes on instead of the tail light.

On my 2011, the park position turns on the tail light. I just checked it.

I hate that feature too. I'm always afraid I am going to leave it in the park position and kill my battery.

I've NEVER done anything stupid like that.
