Clutch slips under hard accel
11/02/12 at 20:39:56

I am new to the forum and new to motorcycle ownership - first new post.  I am comfortable working on cars working on all aspects there.

So I got a 95 Savage S650 with a bit of the known issues with a little chain rattle (cam chain tensioner), valve cover oil drip by the header, and petcock fuel issue (ordered by Raptor petcock).

What I am noticing is under hard acceleration the revs climb a lot faster than speed and then it catches up as I let off.  Feels a lot like a clutch slipping to me.  I have only put on 100 miles and previous owner says he just performed an oil change. Based on valve cover drip, it looks fresh like honey but no details from him on what oil, viscosity, or rating other than it is a Motorcycle oil he uses on his Honda Shadow.

What is the easiest way to determine clutch slip issues on these?  Maybe just the right oil is needed.  Any assist is appreciated.

Chris, oil counts.  A lot.   This is your newbie thread that contains the pointers to correct oils.

Next, you need to understand how to adjust your clutch

I'm going through the same thing, I would take the easy remedies first, correct oil, clutch adjusted correctly, levers etc. I just bought some new springs and am going to install them this week if I find me some time. Ill post a lil tutorial as I go and let you know if it cures my problem.

Rather than chase down the previous owner and figure out the oil, I am just replacing it.  I have to do the Verslagen Cam Tensioner replacement anyways.  As I pulled it today, it looked just like the reference pictures of it thingy-eyed in there.  While I am waiting for that to turn around I will check out the clutch specs.
