Heads-up on the cheap cone air-filters:

They block the port for the diaphragm. I didn't even notice this until I pulled the carb off to clean it. I haven't run the bike yet with this filter on so I can't comment on exactly how it affects performance but if you've put one of these cone filters on and have noticed the bike running poorly, you might want to give this a look. The air going into this port controls just about everything on the carb, it's going to cause a problem if it's blocked.

This was the exact cone filter I bought so steer clear of this one if you're in the market.

I reshaped the gasket and knife-edged the port, hopefully this will be enough to keep it in the airstream. Once this thing is running I'll update this thread to let y'all know if it worked.

Crap, now I have to look at the filter this weekend, good going. Although I've been running it for over a year no issues.

This helped fix my top end throttle issue, couldn't get much over 73ish most days and some times up to 80. Messed around with main jets and needle settings. As soon as I notched out the cone filter and unrestricted the diaphram port wooohooo  Grin  have to keep it under 85 (with plenty left to go) on the way to work now  Cool.

This might be something to add in with the carb troubleshooting questions. What kind of cone filter (if its been changed)

I haven't changed the filter, just modified mine. I may be putting a completely different carb on here altogether anyways but at least you confirmed that it caused a problem on this one.

Now I definitely have to look at mine, very good find, thank you.
Also, what's the little brass screw at the bottom of the first picture?

Ok, I took my filter off and looking at it, if I removed the ring of rubber that blocks the intake on the carb, it would cut the part that holds the filter to the rubber boot, the filter wouldnt hold to the rubber anymore. Sorry, not sure if that's clear. Anyway, I've been driving like that for over 2 years now but still I'm wondering if it's affecting performance.

Do you guys ran into the same problem trying to cut the rubber? Do you have a different filter than mine?

my filter wasn't staying on the gasket very well so I used self tapping screws through the gasket into the metal trim of the filter to hold it all together.

So when I ran across this thread bringing the blockage to my attention I just notched out a 1/4 section on one side big enough for the port and just made sure when installing the the gasket is orientated correctly. No need to trim all the way around.

The only performance change I have notice distinctly is the top speed I was having an issue with the bike choking out just over 70mph ..... I hit 89 this morning on the way to work Shocked and I had to lay off after seeing some constables on the other side of the freeway thank goodness for concrete wall divided freeways  Grin

I could've sworn I posted this a couple hours ago, I have no idea what happened.

I shaped the gasket like the inside of a donut so the filter won't fall off and air can get to the port.

I'm having good success with this foam filter without modification.

what are the dimensions on the "cheap cone" air filters you're using and would anyone have a link on where to pick one up?  Thanks!

I ran with the trimmed filter for a week, and I went onto ebay to search out a replacement for cheap. I was planning on a replacement anyways since I fou.d the joint between the gasket and filter unsatisfactory. I have found no difference between engine performance with the trimmed filter and the new foam filter. the foam filter is one piece and the stop lip is very short and does not block any part of the carb intake.
