replacing back tire, what else goes with it?
08/21/12 at 16:41:46
Hi everyone, new forum member here and I really need ya'lls advice. I'm going to change the rear tire on my '07, the stock tire lasted me 10,000 miles, and I know it is a good idea to change the tube with it, but should I also change the rim strip? I have the spare time so I will be doing the job myself. I have heard of people using duct tape in place of or added to the strip, is this a good idea? Would it cause undo hardship, headaches, and knuckle abuse? Lopve the forums, hope you can help. Thx!

You should also replace the tube and the rubber ring. Duct ape is not a good idea.

Cheap duct tape dries up and falls apart, good duct tape creates a sticky mess.

Ok, well that makes the decision even easier. I'll forgo any risk and pay the $2 for the strip. Wasn't trying to be cheap, well a little, just wasn't sure it was the best way to go. Thanks for the advice. Next project will be the front tire, then BREAK IN TIME! Haha.

Get a tube with a 90' valve stem,.. install pointing brake side...
Much easier air-ups...

Glad you said something, I had forgotten to ask about that. Here's a little add on question or two, has anyone used Dynabeads to balance their tires? Is it really worth even bothering to balance them? I would think it would be worth it.

Aren't Dynabeads for tubeless tires?

I know a lot of guys on VTX cafe are running them in tubed tires without issue. I would do 2 oz front and rear, a little extra does not hurt. Tip: if you have something that vibrates like a electric toothbrush or engraver to rest against the valve stem they flow right in.

IDK about the engraver, but I know the toothbrush works great.

Oh, honey! Gonna borrow something to use real quick, have it right back! Promise!
You guys have definitely put me on the right track (my ego and head swell some), I think. Now just need some spare change to get the job done. Wonder just how bad the kids really need to eat? Learning to scavenge is a true skill right?

Suit yourself, but I used a few spots of adheasive under the existing spoke strip,......which looked like new to me.

Dyna Beads:
I know a lot of guys swear by them - enough so that I put them in the rear tire of another bike of mine (tubeless) about 2 years ago. I'm pretty good at checking the pressure before leaving home if I'm going any distance - like 50 miles or more. I have had 2 instances where when I checked the pressure, the valve core stuck open allowing the tire to go flat. The first time I found a bead lodged in the core. I did not actually see a bead the 2nd time, but I feel sure that was the problem also. 90 degree valve stem if that makes a difference.
I'm not planning on using them again. Once I go through the wheel removal, tire removal & mounting, then re-installation, it's not that big of a deal to make a day of it & through in balancing too.
Have not seen a shade tree tire balancing thread on here yet. Might be good to start one.

That cocern did cross my mind. Cross my fingers and eyes and see how well the beads do. Plan is to do the tires in a week or two, enjoying using the truck a/c and radio for a bit.
