1983 GS550 wheels?
08/11/12 at 21:34:20

I'm not feeling very search savvy tonight, so I can't seem to find where I read about older Suzuki GS wheels fitting right up to the Savage; I know one of you old guys has them mounted on your bike; I've saved the pictures, but I can't recall who it is or what years will work.

Just curious if these might work?

The '83 wheels will work on the LS650 but a few things need to be done to do so.
The rear brake assembly is almost identical to ours.  The difference is how it is anchored to the swing arm, so you will need to remove the '83 GS assembly and use the LS650 assembly.  Fortunately it fits exactly so it makes the swap easy.  Rear brake shoes are the same as the LS650 shoes.
To use the front wheel you will need to also get a '83 GS front end; triple tree & forks with the brake caliper or calipers if you use the dual disc version vs the single disc.   The '83 front end mounts to the LS650 frame perfectly, so no problem there.  The '83 front brake disc pads are the same as the LS650 pads.

THANKS LANCER!
I was hoping to just swap the wheel, but I assumed the brake discs would be a problem. I doubt it's something I would really do, but the 18" rim I got to lace onto the stock hub REALLY isn't working out, and I'm studying my options...

Cheers!

Hello, bringing back an old thread...Is it confirmed that I can use a 1981-1983 GS550L rear wheel? I found a few good deals on eBay. I know I'll have to swap some things over. Just curious regarding the axle, spacers, etc...
THANKS!  Wink

I still have the rear wheel on one of my bikes and the best I can remember the axle and spacers from the LS650 work.
The GS wheel I got is a 16" wheel vs the LS 15" wheel.  I was specifically looking for that when I bought it.

Ok very cool to hear! So is it safe to say I should be fine ordering a 550L from 81-83 years? Or should I look for 83 only. Thanks again for your time!

Sorry man, I intended to reply but got diverted; happens a lot lately; aging brain syndrome or something.
I found the reference page I used for the rear wheel.  It looks like we got the same wheel; '83-86 550L, 16" mag wheel.
Does this look like the same one you got ?

I appreciate the good words but I had to make some changes.
Wasn't able to use the dual discs because the forks were from a different model GS and only have a single disc mounting.
This frame had been modified to use that tank but that mod made it necessary to kick the carb out to the side, and mounting issues developed
because of that, so I went back to a stock frame to put the carb back in its original position.
The forks did not work as well as I had wished so went back to stock and installed the Gold Emulator mod and replaced the stock front brake with the upgraded version.
I removed the rear fender and the single seat (not shown) and replaced them with the cafe style from RYCA.
I have a '60's era fiberglass flat track tank to mount when it is ready...still working on it.
So, the bike is looking different and is handling/braking much better.
