1st gear idle rough
07/12/12 at 18:24:39

This could just be a characteristic of the bike like the backfiring, but I was curious if 1st gear idle is typically rough.   If I'm in 1st gear with open clutch and no throttle the bike has a pretty strong sputter that jerks you back and forth a bit as you are driving along.   Maybe I should avoid no throttle in 1st gear?   Apologies for the noob questions.

sounds like you're lugging it at too low an rpm.

Yea, jack the idle up before you scorch your cam bearings.

Thanks for the advice.   Is that just a matter of adjusting the throttle stop screw?  The manual (2007 p.7-18) says "turn the throttle screw in or out so that the engine idles at 1000-1200 r/min."  Is there a way to measure the r/min without a tach or is this a good excuse for me to buy a new tool?   Or could I just eyeball it?  From what you guys are saying the idle is too low.  Would I just need to turn it a few degrees in a certain direction to increase the idle?

Yeah, turn it right to raise the idle.

Turn it to the left to lower it.

The effect is fairly audible and easy to notice.

I just guess on mine, though they do have some smartphone apps, I have heard, that can record your engine idling and can ballpark (I assume) the RPM for you.

Don't we have a video with sound that shows correct idle speed?
