oil leak question
01/29/12 at 20:12:24
Apparently, the Savage is notorious for leaking oil thru a rubber access plug for one of the cylinder head bolts on the right hand side. The replacement part is not too expensive, but the top plate of the cylinder head has to be pulled to gain access.
Has anyone done this upgrade? Is there a spot on this website that documents the process? Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

My 98 has had that oil leak since it was new. It might "weep" out a tablespoon of oil in a year. Never have bothered to fix it.
Savage is a 60s Brit bike knock-off. Leaks in the same locations they did. Adds character.

I fixed that one years ago but have another similar one that leaks a very small amount. These days, I wipe it off and ignore it as long as my oil level is okay. Using full synthetic may not be helping the issue but it really is very little.

Thanks--I will check this out--I have not ridden this bike much since first purchased (it is going thru the ryca mod), but there was a rather large amount of accumulated oil on the bike when I bought it--I would rather get it fixed as opposed to coninue to watch it leak.

Thanks to everyone who offered up advice--I finished up installing the new seal today. It went fairly smoothly, except when I forgot to put the new gasket on the long bolt in the middle before reinstalling the top plate (GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!).
Anyhow, thanks for steering me to the right thread

Well since this bike is a copy of the brits, as the brits say, if its not leaking, its out of oil.
