I started thinking about how much room I could save doing a similar air filter. I am not sure where to get started though. Has anyone else done a filter like this?

Is it just as good as far as function?
Are there other unique ways of mounting it?
Does anyone know how large a filter I would need to order?

Search the forum for "pod" or "cone" air filter. lots of good information.

Plenty of people have done it.

Function:
it is good in that it lets more air flow in. arguably bad in that by doing so allows more dirt/dust in as well. May or may not require rejetting your carb depending on your exhaust set up

Mounting:
mine is attached to the carb by way of a PVC elbow and flexible plumbing coupling. got both at lowes for a few bucks, works well. In theory, with a short intake like that the air flow is too turbulent (or was it not turbulent enough....) and will affect idle, but I doubt you'd notice that much.

How large a filter:
take a ruler out to your bike, measure the diameter of the carb intake, go find a filter that fits. I want to guess the opening is around 53mm, but i'm not positive. you can get filters a few mm bigger or smaller and stretch or compress them to fit. I got mine off ebay for around $9 IIRC

EDIT: Filter boot opening is closer to 57mm according to Boofer (close to 2 1/4 inches).

i saw one of these on a savage here a LONG LONG time ago.

probably what i'm going with. Unless someone here calls them dangerous for the engine.

IMPORTANT QUESTION: Do I have to rejet if I remove the air box and toss this filter on? What should I do about the tubes that run into and out of the air filter box?

Ha....yes, pisser is Boston talk for good, usually preceded by "wicked".

In answer to your question, yes, you will *probably* want to rejet after you change that filter out, as you'll end up running a little leaner now that the engine can inhale the way it wants to. And then you'll probably want to modify your exhaust so it can exhale the way it wants to as well. Either way, you'll want to rejet, or at least tune via the mixture screw. I don't know how it is up in Canada, but new jets are pretty cheap. Also, Lancer has a jet kit, from what I've heard.
