Hey there!

I'm looking for advice on in preparation for a Savage purchase and haven't found this discussed on the site already.

How much blue'ing of the exhaust manifold is enough to worry about? I'm thinking of purchasing this bike http://ottawa.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAdLargeImage?AdId=288771800&ImageIndex=3 but there seems to be more blue on the pipe near the cylinder than most listings I've seen. I guess the other folks could have been polishing theirs before listing, but after my last bike experience (see http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1187133710/1291#1291) I'd like to avoid buying a lemon.

I'm not so concerned about the looks as the possibility of an engine run lean or idled too long and the resulting heat damage. Any input is appreciated!

After rejetting, your blue header turned to brown....I bought a used s40 that is bluish-brown. I haven't had the time to look inside yet to see if rejetting is done. Is it possible the previous owner has rejetted my bike? Maybe that's why my mileage is so darn low (38mpg). I really need to open up my carbs soon.

Mine was an almost constant backfire, but delivered good MPG, decent power & NO Blue n the pipe till I sat still & racked the thing off a while,, But, being the tinkerer I am,, I wanted to mess with it a bit,, soo,, I jetted & did the exhaust & swapped the cam, but the more I think about it,,the more I think the B/F could have just been a leaky header,, OOohh welll,, I done dood it now,,

1) To get my hands dirty and tinker around

2) My mileage is still really low (38), so I want to see what the previous owner has done on this bike.
3) More performance?

There's no urgent need I suppose.

Go buy some stuff called "Blue Job", it comes in a powder, you mix a little water with it to make a paste and you rub it on your pipes. Stuff works like a charm, it made my blue, discolored pipes appear like new and its been staying that way too. Try googleing it, they have some videos of someone applying it to their pipes and its impressive watching the discoloration disappear.
