Possibly, loss of enough current to hold h solenoid in on the decomp? Possibly,,

Youll know right after you put the new battery in..

would a funky battery cause the decomp to work intermittantly, or is this a whole new problem that i have to deal with?

Huh  what makes you think it working intermittently?

Good point, it only pulls in for a fraction of a second,, Just long enough for the starter to get the piston flying along, &  flywheel a spinnin,,

i think its intermittent because sometimes it clicks and sometimes it doesnt. when i first noticed that i didnt hear the decomp click, i started watching it everytime i hit the starter button. sometimes it would work and sometimes not.

the adjustment could be a little loose that would affect it.

I'd put a volt meter on the decomp lead and see if it was getting power every time.
