voltage regulator 04 savage
04/16/11 at 13:04:11

Hi folks. I am new to the site and to the savage, bought the bike late last fall rode a little before putting her away for the winter. Removed battery it was very low on water topped up and slow charged battery saved. Fast forward to spring install battery and check charging system as per manual. I have 17 volts at battery, bike running, alternator and stator pass tests. No test for regulator other than try known good one. Are the voltage regulators known to have trouble? Thanks for looking.

Usually not too many issues with the regulators but 17V at the battery is a bit high and would have a tendency to cook the water away.

some rectifiers run hot
check, clean all the connectors and hope for the best.
no adjustments otherwise.

Funny you should ask, but I saw an ad somewhere the other day for 16 or 17 volt batteries for racing apps.

checked and cleaned connections, no corrosion, checked wiring ok looks like I need a regulator. Could be worse at least I could use the old one to check a no charge condition.

Update my savage is running fine now. Priced up a regulator locally for $320.00 ( wow ),l rechecked wires and connections to be very sure. I surfed the net and found a used one for $35.00 delivered. Ordered it and installed it today. Voltage at battery is 14.8 at idle and 15.5 volts reved up. My bike came with saddle bags and they were tied over the regulator blocking the fins possibly causing it to over heat.
