tdc question
04/30/11 at 08:55:23

just finished putting in new cam chain. my question is, when i turned the nut around to find tdc if i went a little too far the piston would drop. with new chain, clutch cover and stator cover back on it doesnt do it any more. i have to turn the nut on down stroke also now. is this normal or did i get something too tight?

Makes a difference if you have the sparkplug in or out... Compression gives it a push...

Is that it?...

Nope, the push normally comes from the valve springs coming back off full compression.

Likely he has something acting all stiff and rough like .....

If you can roll it freely by hand, try rolling it with the starter motor with no plug.

If the motor won't turn it over, then you got issues to fix.

If the motor will turn it over, give it a few gos (letting the starter cool off between goes of course) and see if it doesn't loosen up some.

Then do it again with the plug in place to make sure it will turn over against full compression.

well i gave it a few goes with starter after cranking by hand a few times. it finally started with a little persuasion with starting fluid in the beginning, no slapping or clanking parts.
think i might need a new battery though. this one just doesnt seem to have enough gusto to crank on it, even after charge. gives me a reason to get a sealed battery anyway.
would a funky battery cause the decomp to work intermittantly, or is this a whole new problem that i have to deal with?
