Valve Problem? or Carb?
04/18/11 at 23:18:58

I recently started repairing my father-in-laws '86 LS650 Savage. It had been sitting in the garage since 2001. I completly cleaned the carb and all jets and stuff. Also removed both side of the engine cleaned everything and resealed. Had to replace the cam chain tentioner cuz it broke back in 2001. When I released the holding piece from the tentioner it pushed almost all the way out, kinda of worried me that the chain need to be replaced but Im not sure. Also another problem I have is when it's ideling I get fuel blowing back towards the airfilter. Is the valves messed up or something? Also The bike runs irratic when i give it alot of throttle kind of like goes then sputters. Any help would help me getting it running good.

stop, don't run!
your dad's cam chain has slipped a cog.
This happens when the adjuster falls apart.
The adjuster doesn't break, they fall apart allowing things to get out of time.
