backfire
04/08/11 at 06:19:55

My wife's Savage backfires every time when she turns the engine off, and only when she turns it off. I understand it seems to be a common problem with Savage, and my wife doesn't mind this backfiring at all, my only concern is to make sure it won't cause any further damage to the bike. For the record - I have adjusted the valves and replaced the air filter (with an K&N one) on this bike when my wife bought it last year (5 year old with 12k miles on it) - we have no idea of the maintenance history of the bike.

Thanks everyone!

Adjust your idle mixture about an 1/8 turn richer and it should dull the pow to a poof.  If not add a little more.

where is this screw? I apologize if that has already been covered - is this procedure documented somewhere? Would I have to temper with the brass plug to get to the screw? I understand it's illegal (in some states or countries) to do that. If I don't adjust it richer - will it cause any other problems down the road? Thanks a lot!

Yes, it's under the brass plug on the right side.

I don't think the shutdown backfire hurts anything.

If the backfiring,....afterfire (call it what we like) hurt anything, mine would really be hurting. It doesn't hurt a thing,....trust me.

I found a brass screw in the upper portion of the carb, on the right hand side - does that sound like the right one? Is there a pic available anywhere of this screw? Thanks!
