car tire advice
02/22/11 at 08:56:24

I have a very slow leak in one of my tires on my car . It's a michelin with good rubber . There is no nail hole and it's never been plugged . I think its a pinhole or something like that ,about 5 lbs every two weeks . Would you reccomend using fix a flat on this ,or just keep filling it? Thanks!!

Probably leaking out of the bead...
A lot of tire places will fix flats and leaks for free.  Even if you have to pay, it's not much more than a can of Fix-a-flat...
Go back to where you bought the tire.
Fix-a-flat is for emergencies, to get you home, not a cure.  And it just makes a giant mess in the tire...

I agree, go to a shop. My last tire repair was 4.50, well worth it.

Could be the valve leaking too,Spray some wd40 on the valve  before you put air in it next time you put air in.

Needs a bubbles check - rim/bead likely or the dang valve stem/core -
a real shop can check it out quick for you - not so sure about some of
these nation chain stores however.

Our local tire shop won't guarantee a patch fix if Fix-A-Flat has ever been used in the tire.  So if you think you might eventually take it to a shop, you might not want to use that nasty stuff.  Or check with your local shop first.

I found a small leak once by over-filling the tire and squirting it with a spray mist bottle.  Finally found the little tiny hole.  Plugged it.

Yep, spray it with soapy water & watch for the bubbles. Had a customer that had been to the tire shop 3 times for a slow leak thet couldn't find. Took about a minute to find & mark so SHE could show them the leak. She wanted to know why they didn't use soapy water?

I told her she needed to ask them, my daddy showed me when I was 7 to find the leaks in my bike tubes...But he was a VERY smart man!! Cool

And +1 on NO fix-a-flat!!! That shhstuff is super NASTY!!!!

If you're going to overinflate a tire to test it ,how many lbs of air should you put in ? Thanks.

Yea, don't blow it up!  Just enough to make sure the leak is actually leaking!   Cool

Could be a thin piece of wire from a cable stuck in the tire. i had something like that in a tire and it would loose about 5 lbs/week. Couldn't see it but a leak test in the water bin at the tire store spotted it. Try to find a local tire store to fix it, all the big chains will do is tell you that you need to replace it.

You can spit on a finger & hold it over th valve stem, tilt it slightly & a bubble will form on one side. If the valve is leaking, youll see it almost immediately.
A spray bottle, almost filled w/ water, THEN add the soap, spray the bead on both sides, No Bubbles? Spray the tread. Still no bubbles? Hold  your eyes open & spray th soapy solution in until youre crying.. Why? YOu may ask..
No reason, Im just mean like that... Wink
