Title: car tire advice Post by rl153 on 02/22/11 at 08:56:24 I have a very slow leak in one of my tires on my car . It's a michelin with good rubber . There is no nail hole and it's never been plugged . I think its a pinhole or something like that ,about 5 lbs every two weeks . Would you reccomend using fix a flat on this ,or just keep filling it? Thanks!! |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by Serowbot on 02/22/11 at 09:04:08 Probably leaking out of the bead... A lot of tire places will fix flats and leaks for free. Even if you have to pay, it's not much more than a can of Fix-a-flat... Go back to where you bought the tire. Fix-a-flat is for emergencies, to get you home, not a cure. And it just makes a giant mess in the tire... |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by Savage_Amusement on 02/22/11 at 09:20:42 I agree, go to a shop. My last tire repair was 4.50, well worth it. |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by bill67 on 02/22/11 at 09:33:32 Could be the valve leaking too,Spray some wd40 on the valve before you put air in it next time you put air in. |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by Reelthing on 02/22/11 at 09:36:47 Needs a bubbles check - rim/bead likely or the dang valve stem/core - a real shop can check it out quick for you - not so sure about some of these nation chain stores however. |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by babyhog on 02/22/11 at 10:47:41 Our local tire shop won't guarantee a patch fix if Fix-A-Flat has ever been used in the tire. So if you think you might eventually take it to a shop, you might not want to use that nasty stuff. Or check with your local shop first. I found a small leak once by over-filling the tire and squirting it with a spray mist bottle. Finally found the little tiny hole. Plugged it. |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by RidgeRunner13 on 02/22/11 at 11:15:51 Yep, spray it with soapy water & watch for the bubbles. Had a customer that had been to the tire shop 3 times for a slow leak thet couldn't find. Took about a minute to find & mark so SHE could show them the leak. She wanted to know why they didn't use soapy water? I told her she needed to ask them, my daddy showed me when I was 7 to find the leaks in my bike tubes...But he was a VERY smart man!! 8-) And +1 on NO fix-a-flat!!! That shhstuff is super NASTY!!!! |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by rl153 on 02/22/11 at 11:45:20 I'll try the soap bubbles, and wd40 in the valve. |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by rl153 on 02/22/11 at 14:40:15 If you're going to overinflate a tire to test it ,how many lbs of air should you put in ? Thanks. |

Title: Re: car tire advice Post by Serowbot on 02/22/11 at 14:53:37 Read on the tire,.. inflate to max recommended... ;)... |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by rl153 on 02/22/11 at 15:19:21 it says max 35 lbs. I guess thats it.It's a good thing I asked |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by babyhog on 02/22/11 at 15:34:01 Yea, don't blow it up! Just enough to make sure the leak is actually leaking! 8-) |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by Ed L. on 02/22/11 at 15:52:17 Could be a thin piece of wire from a cable stuck in the tire. i had something like that in a tire and it would loose about 5 lbs/week. Couldn't see it but a leak test in the water bin at the tire store spotted it. Try to find a local tire store to fix it, all the big chains will do is tell you that you need to replace it. |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by justin_o_guy2 on 02/22/11 at 18:21:52 You can spit on a finger & hold it over th valve stem, tilt it slightly & a bubble will form on one side. If the valve is leaking, youll see it almost immediately. A spray bottle, almost filled w/ water, THEN add the soap, spray the bead on both sides, No Bubbles? Spray the tread. Still no bubbles? Hold your eyes open & spray th soapy solution in until youre crying.. Why? YOu may ask.. No reason, Im just mean like that... ;) |
Title: Re: car tire advice Post by Boofer on 02/22/11 at 19:13:03 I sold tires for 14 years, and put them on awhile before that. Go to a shop that only sells tires. They have the experience to find the leak. I have seen MANY leaks in after market and OE wheels. Sometimes the aluminum has a very small hole. Hard to find without dunking in tire bath. Not a big deal to someone who has the experience. Could cost around $10-15, but that's about 1/10 of the value of that tire. |
