spark issues, I think, help please
02/15/11 at 20:54:19

I can ride for about 15~20 min no problem, so I can get to work or the store. I can also just ride on the back roads and free way for some time yet I do feel it just losing power for no good reason it seems. The bike will either die or try to die on me at the lights/signs in the city yet I can sometimes just hit the gas and get it to pick up again yet that only helps me get to a place a I can stop. If I just fire the bike up, let it warm up, then take off the coke and let it run it dies after 10mins or so and black smoke does come out of the tail pipe (not much yet it does). I am not sure if its a coil or what yet it seems like I just lose spark. I need to get a new timing light if I had one that worked I would tell you what I find there.

Has anybody seen this problem or have any suggestions on what I should look at? I have no problem starting the bike, fires up with no problems. I am at the point I am ready to just take it to a shop and let them deal with it yet not sure who to take it to yet and haven't been happy dealing with the Suzuki guys in town. Just want some suggestions if there are any.

Thanks

Tell us about your bike...
miles?
new sparkplug?
new air filter?
new battery?

Did you try prime?

Try cleaning the battery connections and the engine ground.

Are you trickle charging between rides?

What was the last work you've done?

Do this,..
Check this,..
Even if you don't think it can be this,... just check it...
... and don't do just part of it, and rule it out..
Do exactly this...

Test your Petcock,..

I would put some sea foam in the gas and see if that does it.

Smells like a petcock issue -- do what the guys said.

Electrical issues don't "come and go" generally speaking and what you are describing in all its marvelous confusing colors and shades is a petcock slowly failing (and we've seen it before MANY times).

The FireLizard was doing exactly as you described for a while and a new coil took care of it.

2001 w/ 5250ish miles
New air filter (purchased bike at 4800, and put filter on shortly after)
New spark plug (now wonder if I should check the spark gap again)
Recently cleaned the carb (myself ... I had no extra parts and it went well, was easy enough from what I found on this site)
It does have the Jardine on it, yet thats how I bought it, I do have the sock setup and tried it as well on there with no change.

I have ran it on prime yet I am not sure if its in my mine it helps or not. I will test the petcock by that link and see what happens.

I can never seem to get it restarted once it dies for good unless I wait for a while. I smell fuel like its flooded so I didn't think about the petcock yet I shall try that.

I was thinking the coil could be getting too hot yet just seems hard when its seems out of the way from major heat.

battery connections are clean and the battery was recently added (if i can believe the seller) yet it seems to hold a charge. I would like to add a trickle charger mod to it.

Thanks all, I will try a few things and see what happens

Do the Serowbot test first. My bike worried me to death the first couple of weeks until I figured out the vacuum hose from the carb to the petcock didn't have a 30 cent clamp on it. After that we will go all the way to figuring out your problem. By "We", I mostly mean the other guys, but there is a lot of accumalated experience on here and we are slow to recommend turning over your money to the dealer without trying the "fixes" first.

If the coil is going bad it can heat up a cause you to lose fire which is exactly what happened to the FireLizard.

The dieing for good and having to wait a while is another symptom the FireLizard was having. I definitely suspect the coil.

So... my 2002 savage is my first motorcycle - don't slap me for my ignorance.

I am having similar issues with it running like crap / running rich / dieing and not wanting to start again in "ON".... until I switched to running on "PRI" all the time.  Problems went away.

With the test, if I am already running good in PRI, and I remove the vacuum hose and cap it... what should be different?

Nothing, but you eliminate the chance that the petcock diaphragm will fail leaking gas into the airbox or crankcase.

Have you tried replacing the vac line?

There's also a replacement diaphragm.

If you're using prime, when you shut off, turn to "on"
