As far as I can think of, warming up the engine basically involves two important things: evenly heating up the engine block, and warming up the lubricant(motor oil). If the inside of your cylinder is hot, and the outside is cold, the expanding hot parts will create stresses on the cold outside parts. This is bad. If your lubricant isn't warmed up enough, it'll be too viscous, and won't properly coat your cylinder. This leads to higher wear.

If you rush the warm up process by using the throttle, you'll heat up the inside of the engine very quickly, before that heat gets a chance to spread to the colder outsides. This causes the thermal stress I mentioned above.

That's not to say *any* throttle is bad during warm up. You just can't have too much.

I ride in the frost too. However what I do is, and that applies to any weather, I pull the choke half way and crank. I let it idle for about 30 seconds, then push the choke back in. needs a little throttle not to die doing that and then keep it at 1,500rpm until the cylinder starts feeling warm to the touch, Then I drive off relaxed and shift at 3,000 for another mile or two. Routy is correct: when I shaved my white spacer, it had significantly effect on the choke. It needs waaay less and less time. I never need more than half choke. And I never need the choke, unless it drops to below 50 degrees.

LOL

I've owned 2 LS650s ... an '03 and an '05 ... both were stock as far as engine/carburation/exhaust systems were concerned and neither was Ridden thru the winter months (too much snow/ice up here) and the cold start procedure was same for both and worked flawlessly ... pull choke knob all way out, crank Bike (stared right up every time), immeaditely push choke knob in 1/2 way, pull on Lid and gloves, Ride Bike gently from house down as far as gas station on corner (1.0km/0.62mi exactly), reach down and push choke knob all way in. Ride off as normal because Bike is now warmed up ... this worked for me regardless of air temp.

Reply #26 - 12/19/10 at 09:52:33 So lately i've found out that i can warm up the bike for about 2-3 minutes with choke all the way out. If i push the choke in fast, the bike dies. HOWEVER, if i push the choke in SLOWLY, it continues to idle! This is an amazing discovery for me (Haha). Stock bike btw!
