I wouldn't use them as boot drives, see if they can be accessed as data drives and download what you need.

Good idea, I'll try that. I'll let you know if it works.

Well, that worked like a fart in a whirlwind.

bummer man, but at least you have a computer to get around with.

Very true, even though my notebook is a HP Omnibook 6000 which is so obsolete that when it came out Windows 2000 was the newest OS. But oh well, it still works. And it isn't too slow for having only a 900mhz processor even though I am used to a 3ghz.

To tell you the truth, I am surprised that my desk top lasted as long as it did. I built it over five years ago. So I reckon a comp that lasts that long did pretty well.

my pentium133 i built in 97 still play's music for me, that and basic surfing. 13 years old and still going.  i've replaced the cpu fan several times now.
keep it clean and cool darn thing should last for some time to come

Ordered an an IDE to USB adapter and was able to connect my desktop hard drives to my notebook's USB port and Viola: I was able to access all the data I thought I had lost including my manuscripts, movies, and other misc. bullsh!t.

I see this all the time. I would get a usb converter pull the data off to a back up then run chkdisk on it and put it back in the system. ninety percent of the time this will get the drive up and running. good luck.

With two desktops and 3 laptops in our household doing backups was a pain! My solution was a EX470 HP Mediasmart home server. Runs a backup every night and is pretty simple to use and has saved my butt a couple times when the girlfriends laptop crashed. They can be had for a decent price on ebay. From what I have heard HP is no longer going to be making them however a basic computer running Windows Home Server is basicly he same thing.
