Noob with a starting problem!!!

Hello Everyone
I am new to the forum and the Savage. I currently ride a 2008 M109R and just bought an 86' Savage for my wife to learn on. I am planning on modding to a bobber but for now I would just like to get it started again!! I bought the bike two days ago and today when I tried to start it no go. I bought a brand new battery for it so I know it's not that. The bike was running when I bought it. The next morning it wouldn't start. The petcock is fine, it works in all positions and I am getting spark!!! Any ideas?

Normally, check the obvious things. Spark plug and petcock (which you did) check or clean the carb. Depending on how long the bike has been sitting before you purchased, something in the carb could be plugged or gummed up. Check the tech section on how to clean out your carb.

You also might want to check the decompression solenoid and make sure that is working and adjust if it isn't. This opens the intake valves on startup.

Others on the forum that has this problem as well. If you search on "starting problem" it will come up with lots of hits (you can search by week, month(s), year, etc.) from some of the forum resident experts.

Whoa! a bit of misinfo here, the decomp kicks open the exhaust valves.

check your voltage on startup, if it drops to 10v, it ain't gonna start.
if the starter is turning, don't worry about the decomp. fresh gas and a clean carb. you might try some starter fluid or wd40 in the intake.

I'm sure you checked the obvious; kill switch, neutral & i don't think you have a kickstand cutoff switch on an '86. Is the gas fresh:i'll eliminate the middleman and suggest seafoam. How do you like that m109? I've been drooling over them on craiglslist for about a year. I know they are great on the freeway but how are they around town? stratman

The bike does have a sidestand switch but the little piece of chain that connects to it is not there so basically it is bypassed. I will be fixing that over the winter. I am not sure if the neutral switch is working. The light doesnt come on when I put it in neutral. It was like that in the beginning anyway when it did run. Where is the switch and how do you test it?

P.S. Stratman the 109 is a crazy machine!!! When I first got it it took a bit of getting used too for city driving, but now its a breeze.

Reply #7 - 09/04/10 at 20:12:41 with the kickstand up, it can be in gear to start. but maybe the kickstand switch is the problem. you can by pass it at the connector under the seat. there are several and i'm not sure what the '86 looks like. but if it turns over, this is not the problem.

Cleaned up the carbs, sprayed a little starter fluid and she fired. I put the tank back on, primed the carb and bang!! she started. Only problem now is she is running rich. What direction should I adjust the mixture screw? CW or CCW? Thanks Andy
