...125cc tunning (what rear tire?)
04/26/10 at 07:26:58

UPDATE:

(need new rear tire) bike is running fine, almost rode
on it 1k miles since I bought it and all is just dandy,
still want a brighter headlamp but the 45w did make
a positive difference but now it needs new rear tire.

The other day i almost kissed the road, hard, when
the rear tire kept going on a wettish curve (oil patch?)
but my old motocross instincts, along w/the low weight
of the bike, saved my butt when I kicked the pavement
with my inside leg and gave it gas to recover verticality,
it worked!  Cheesy

anyway What size tire you'all think fits a 16" araya
rim originally made for a 3.50x16 tire?

it has a new D-404 in front so i was thinking of a matching
D404 110/90 D16 59 P as well, I want something
somewhat wider and a bit round so i can safely curve and
lean the bike a bit, cause that original bidgestone 3.50 tire
is a joke, just too thin. And yes, there is a good deal of space
to put something wider in it, but how wide can the rim take?

And can I put a correct size front tire in the rear of this light bike
or are the threads and/or rubber compound somewhat different?
Cause I cannot a find a dunlop 404 that size designed specifically
for the rear.

Any ideas?
thanx again.

--------------------------------------------

So I bought this used 97`yamaha sr125,
motor has about 7K miles and is in pretty
good shape; great w/gas and insurance.

*larger view: http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/1577/20100424155500.jpg

Just tuned it:

- fresh oil
- sparkplug
- new battery
- gas & oil filter
- new clutch cable
- lubed chain & controls
- new front dunlop 404 (it`s GREAT!)
- smaller rear sprocket (46T / original 49T)

....aanyway, the thing runs fine and goes about 60mph flat
(no headwind), 65mph downhill and 45ish up nasty uphills

1) Need passing power, what would YOU do for a bit more torque ?

notes: has original exhaust, will "opening" it
be counterproductive? will investing in a new one
make a big difference/what kind fits? 5th gear is kinda
useless except downhill; it has a 22mm? carb and a
102 main jet (choked with a 112, will try a 108 soon).

2) Need auxiliary lamps for night driving

notes: it has a mediocre 35/35W old-school bulb, would
replacing it with a 45/45W modern bulb damage my CDI?
Would (2x) 55W auxiliary lamps (direct battery hook-up?)
drain/damage my battery?

3) Carb and airbox are spotless, petcok is fine, but...

it starts/runs/accelerates fine BUT it "chokes/gasps" everytime
I downrev at highspeeds for a curve and then want to give it gas
again, what gives?

Thanks in advance, all advice appreciated  Wink

My Savage used to die when Id pull in the clutch & chop throttle at high speeds. I jacked the idle up.

IDK what kind of performance you should be getting out of a 125.

I can tell you what a box-stock 2007 Kawasaki 125 Eliminator does. It will make about 65 mph on flat ground with no wind. That is pushing a Plexifairing 3 windshield, which actually seems to make little or no difference in performance. It seems happier at 55, though.

Personally, I would try putting the original sprocket back on and see what happens. You might actually do just a tad better with a larger rear sprocket, say 50 teeth, letting the engine spin faster.

Many years ago I had a 175 Bridgestone two-stroker. As I bought it, it would reach top speed in 4th and, maybe, hold that speed in 5th. I put a one-tooth-smaller front sprocket on it, after which it actually went faster than before in 4th and even faster in 5th (according to its speedometer). I no longer remember the actual tooth numbers, but one tooth change in the front sprocket is usually about equivalent to three teeth on the rear.

allrighty then, the bike seems to be mechanically right where
it should be, no point of over investing in an unbroken bike
that works well as it is to get only minimal results at the end,
i mean, one can only push that little piston so far.

I`ll focus rather on saving up my money for a new savage
and fooling around with the main jet sizes and carb settings
(thanx for the tip justin, will rev the idle up a bit), will adjust
the valves soonish and will think about replacing the 46T rear
with the original 49T sprocket.   Look here (pretty handy):

www.sprocketcalculator.com

** About the extra headlamp(s), how-to technical
instalation advice will be highly appreciated. Anyone
else out there with smallish 4-stroke engine experience?

As far as the headlight situation is concerned. Mount a 4 "D-cell" Maglight to the handlebars.  I doubt you the amperage to run a brighter lamp.

It is alot of bike for a 125,it looks almost like a full size bike, steel rims
are heavy, there are lots of odds and ends could be taken off I'm sure .
Actualy the performance doesn't sound to bad I had only one 125 ,a little BSA Bantam and 55 mph was it, although it was a smoker.
2 stroke.
Try a tank full of premium, just for the halabut
PS,very nice scenery in the background,I always did like Germany.
I was Stationed near "Paderborn" while in the British Army ,do you know it Stimpy?

Grin  duct taped maglight on the handlebars, i like it.

Maybe a low-wattage, high output LED system,
i don`t know but I need more lights; 35W just
won`t do through those 15miles of thick beautiful,
hilly, curvy forest every evening back from work,
tough commute huh?  Wink

The flywheel specs are the following:
(it`s not as weak a system as i tought)

- charging output 9A @ 5000 rpm
- lighting output 14,5V @ 5000 rpm
- battery 12V-7Ah
- main fuse 20A
- stock headlamp 12V- 35/35W

Tomorrow I`ll go to the hardware store to
see what i can find, maybe some household
12V led spot lighting?  I`ll keep you posted.

On the flat, weight has almost no effect on top speed. Acceleration, yes, but not top speed. Weight will affect hill-climbing.

You might try changing the stock headlight bulb for a 45/45 bulb instead of the stock 35/35. That will draw about one amp more (4 instead of 3). You might have some results by going over all the wiring connections, unplugging and replugging them. That might remove some corrosion. Loosen and retighten both ends of both battery cables, too. Make sure to get the connections hidden inside the headlight shell. It might help to run an extra ground wire from somewhere on the handlebar assembly to somewhere on the frame, but Japanese bikes are reasonably good about not depending on the frame for ground.

I seriously doubt you can get any amount of LED lighting which will make an amprovement on the headlight situation. What MIGHT help would be replacing running lights with lower-current LEDs, which would free up a little more current for the larger headlight bulb.

Stimpy, 35W lights are so low power the handlebar switch will be THE switch, no relay.

So, if you want to run a better light, go directly for the "Big Brother", 55/60W via a relay (fused).

Given the laws of Physics, one 55W "low beam" will provide as much light as two 35W "high beams", and draw a lot less current (fewer amps)

BTW, the electrical system you have is pretty much what you find on the Savage, 100W alternator (12V / 8A) so it's a good way to practice working on your next Savage.

BTW, I have already found one for you here in Rome, belongs to a journalist I know, 15500 Euro and you have a 5-speed with personalized tank paint (Monument Valley)

Cool

...of course €15k euros, it's pimped italian style!

ferrari red, lotta bling, all signals made of swarovski crystals,
versace accessories, gucci printed leather for the seats, says
"mamma" on the tank and smells all over like dolce and gabbana
"le male". Thats it, im buying it! fly to rome, pick it up and drive
it back through the alps! yeah baby.

..............................................................................

Anyway, got a 45/40W replacement bulb so lets see how that works,
i was gonna get a 55W but it turns out in my case its illegal over
here because of oncoming traffic rules (gotta love those germans),
according to my mechanic friend you must use the approved stock
configurations at all times and he also told me that bored cops are
looking at night for exactly those kind of things to give young bikers
a hard time.

Ironic since some cars over here have (4x) 55W blinding
xenon lamps, plus foglamps but i cannot put the baja 1000
desert lights on my bike that i wanted so i dont kill myself
against a dear or wild bore while running through the forest
at night, makes sense i guess    Roll Eyes

Anyway, went to the gas station and the numbers are in
70MPG!
Cool (not too bad @ $7.50usd/gal) jeez!

Other numbers for this particular bike include:

- plates, registration fee and taxes were together about 70euros for 2 years.

- 52euros for the government mech, tech & environment b.s. checkup, 2 years.

- and full insurance is 62euros a year, so im all set till' 2012  Wink

All prices (except plates and checkup) will immediately
at least triple when i get a savage, yay!

** adjusted the carb (idle rpms) still gasps on curves, im
guessing the pendulum (floater inlet needle thingy) is old.

I'll let you know how the new bulb works, thanks guys!.

90mpg is way on the high side but on the rebel forum there was a member who was getting over 100mpg by hypermiling. My usual was 65-70mpg on my '02. My friend Elaina gets about the same on her '86.

90mpg, IDK if thats normal or even possible.

on a 250cc/2 cylinder engine??   ...mmmmm

Sounds kinda fishy, maybe he has purposely a smaller
main jet installed and never rides over 50mph, who
knows (are the newer rebels fuel injected or something?).

I'm guessing i could maaaybe get 80mpg if i drove like a
decent human being, followed the speed limits and let the
thing pick up speed on its own, but that's no fun; also currently
the bike has a #102 main jet (not sure why), the stock jet is a
#108, let's see how the MPG and top speed get affected after
i change it back. Thanks again guys.
