If the maintenance records look good go for the newer one.

I don't think of a '95 as especially "new." It is already fifteen years old. With 5000 miles, it probably has the original tires, which means you'll be spending a couple or three hundred dollars for tires. It may or may not have a good battery. You are now up to 50% of the price of a NEW one, and it is still 15 years old. It's your money and your choice.

got my '96 w/16k for $1400 a few years ago
the $1000 for the '87 seem about right, but I'd rather have a '95 or later.
I'd aim for $2k for a 2k as a good deal but you're at the beginning of the riding season so expect to pay premium or get a bike right out of storage that don't run.

If I'm not mistaken, the '87 belongs to Rigidchop, a member here.  Don't remember much about his bike, but someone else might.

Where are you?  Looking at Columbus/Parkersburg Craigslist made me curious.  I live in St. Albans WV.

There are so many things to take into account aside from year and mileage, from dings in the tank to any modifications.  I noticed that Suzuki seems to divide the Savage into '86-'88, '95,  and '96-'04 in their parts listings.  I don't know what the differences are but that makes a '96 sound a lot newer than than a '95.

i paid 2000(includin dealer fees) for my 95 that had 7000 on it...it WAS mint, brand new tires, battery, all fluids, and they fixed a turn signal....so i guess i got a good deal

and oh yea, this was in west palm...where everything costs more !

I'm not sure what tires & battery you use, but for me to replace them it would be no more than $400-$500 max and probably less. (MUCH MUCH LESS than 50% of the cost of a NEW BIKE >$4,000)

After looking at both ads, my gut feeling would be the newer bike, but $2k seems like too much for it. I paid $2k for my 2005 with just over 5k miles on it (but it was hacked up into a custom bob job that was not done very well & I have put about $500 into it to get it back to a full cruiser style bike, including new tires, saddlebags, windshield & more)

I would keep looking, and in order to get the best deal you will need to be PATIENT, but ready to jump when you find the deal, because it won't last long.

man, i got a tremendous deal on mine if thats what you guys paid - $2200 for a 2003 with 2075 miles  Grin. they also had a mechanic look it over and put in a new battery and plug.

i'm glad you went with a member's bike. theres some sort of good feeling about recycling a cycle to a new member.
