Clutch seems to slipping, but not sure
09/21/09 at 11:32:06

I have a '96 Savage with a little over 22,000 miles on the BadBoy. I replaced the clutch plates and the clutch springs 1,000 miles ago. As I went on the highway the other day, I noticed something strange. As I was trying to acelerate on the highway, the engine would rev higher with very little increase in speed. I can hear the negine reving. However, I wasn't going much faster. As the engine slowly came down in RPMs, the clutch would then catch. The cable seems to have slack and it was running fine up until now. I haven't noticed it on local riding, but mostly on highway riding. Any thoughts?

1st thought, there are marks on the case behind the clutch lever, where are they in relationship to the lever?  inbetween? at the top? at the bottom?

Sorry for the confusion. Are you referring to the lever on the engine case, or you mean the lever on on the handlebar? Where are these markings located?

As long as the clutch lever has slack, those marks dont matter. Those are there to allow the clutch assy to be tuned to make the clutch throw out operate inside its area of geometric efficiency & limit the loads on the "paddle".
Does the oil have friction modifiers? How much slack is in the lever? If you cant move that thing an 1/8th of an inch with the end of your nose, its too tight.

Right, lever on handlebar, should have 1/8" freeplay MINIMUM
and check with the bars turned left and right.

The one on the engine is called a "release arm", but that's for people who call the forks "front dampers"  I always wonder why the common terms are so descriptive and the god given terms leave you with stars in your eyes.   Huh
