My s40 has less than 3000 mi on it .When it idles after riding 1/2 an hour it makes an intermitant scraping noise which seems to be coming from the head or around there The oil level is right. Is this normal? It runs strong otherwise .Thanks.

You didn't mention the year on the motorcycle. Is it new enough to still be within Suzuki's warranty? If so, get thee hence to the dealership and tell them about it, so as to get the complaint either resolved or at least on record. If not, you will have to supply some more detail.

It's a 2005,not under warranty. I don't know how else to describe it .It's like a louder tick than the normal idling piston noise , and it happens about every 5 seconds.

Open that puppy up and find out what the deal is. See if there is any metal shavings or scuff marks.

Crank up the idle speed a little.  Someone on here said the head gets starved for oil if the idle speed is too low.  Also (since it only happens when the engine's hot) try a thicker oil like 20W-50.  Or since the bike takes about 2 quarts, put in one quart of 10W-40 and one 20W-50.

And oh yeah.. magnetize your oil filter and see what it catches..

Buy a disc super-magnet, I think this one, and stick it to the center outside of your oil filter.  That dude "Oldfeller" did this mod first.  He uses a much larger magnet.  Just don't go outside the diameter of the oil filter or inside the diameter of the oil bypass valve, or thicker than 5mm.  Ignore the stuff about maximum temperature; these magnets do fine inside the engine.

I turned up the idle speed ,hopefully it will help . I took the bike to the mechanic ,and at first he thought it was the timing chain making the noise .The bike has only 2800 mi ,so he listened to it for a while and said he thinks it's an exhaust noise ,even tho it sounds a little metalic. He said don't worry about it ,so I won't .Thanks for the help .
