bill67 Serious Thumper Offline old tired Posts: 8517 genoa city wisconsin Gender:	Oil temperture 08/20/09 at 15:18:11 I'm changing my oil today,Rode it 20 miles at 75 degrees,When I drained the oil it wasn't real hot I'm guess 140-150 degrees, cooler than my hot water tap.It had 20w50 Klotz in it I'm putting in a newer Klotz mx4 15w50,Doesn't that seem cool or do they run that cool.

Other reports on this board suggest that modest temperatures are quite common on these bikes. Pretty nifty!

It is my understanding that oil needs to get up around 195 F or so to evaporate any water out. Oil viscosity is measured at 100 C, or 212 F, considered the temperature of a "warmed up" engine. Keeping the oil too cool is no better than letting it get too hot, because it is designed to work in a certain temperature range. My question would be where the temperature should be measured. Does one measure in the sump, in the little "pool" in the head on the Savage/S40, or somewhere else? I think the hottest oil is found on the rings, but it would be difficult to measure it there. The simple air-cooled engine doesn't have any way to control the oil temperature, anyway.

Methinks that low performance and low operating temperatures go hand-in-hand.

Not that I'm complaining....my Savage makes enough power for what I use it for.

All oil takes a frequent trip up to the cam journals and then through the bathtub area right over the angled spark plug hole and gets to exit by the exhaust valves -- I think during its circulation route all oil gets well over 200 degrees for long enough to evaporate any water that might be in it.

Proof is in your drain pan -- ever found any unevaporated water when changing your oil? I remember seeing a droplet or two when changing a car's oil out, but never on the Savage.
