On to the next task...

I have to take the gas tank off, so I'd like to get as much done as possible.

• Cylinder Head and Cylinder Nuts and Bolts Tightening
• Automatic Decompression Cable Adjustment
• Valve Clearance Measurement and Adjustment
• white spacer mod

There are very good instructions in the Technical Documents/Reference forum for all except the first one, although the 'Savage "Plug/Cap" Leak' thread does a decent job. The first one is also the one I'm most concerned about screwing up.

Is this too much for a newbie to attempt at once?
Is there anything in particular that you'd like to warn me about?

Random questions:

What metal is the gas tank made out of?

I've got #4 stainless washers, but I've heard they may be too big. No store (that I've found) carries stainless or nylon smaller. I did find 3mm washers, but they weren't stainless. Any other suggestions?

What grit sandpaper should I use using when I fix the chip in the gas tank? (before primer, between coats, etc)

I think I'm going to chicken out of doing the nut tightening. Maybe at the end of the summer I'll be more confident.

Steel. Soft pressed sheet steel. Rusts quick. Weldable, solderable... Between coats you can use 1000 grit with water. But if you don't know this - you get better results if you take it to someone professional. Much better results. Don't ask how I know.  

Ace didn't have any washers, but TrueValue did.
