the front left fork has a black rubber gasket looking thing that is cracked... what do i need to do to fix this and how much do you think this will be? thanks

The part you can see is most likely the dust seal ($9.79 on Bike Bandit).

A Clymers manual is helpful too.

If it is just the dust seal it shouldn't be too hard to replace yourself. I strongly suggest using the Clymers Manual. Lots of pictures and step by step directions.

That top piece is a dust seal and keeps the dirt off of the real working piece, oil seal underneath it.

Easy to replace, but you gotta drop the fork.

You gotta '88, and don't know if the seals or oil was ever replaced.  I'd get new seals, dusters, oil and retaining rings and do it right.  one busted seal beggets another.
