Drilling through chrome?
11/10/08 at 12:51:02
OK , I bought a ProTac back rest, but after installing it, it pushes me too far forward in the saddle. I would really like to have it mounted about 1 1/2" further back on the rail. Is there a problem with drilling through the rail to make a new mounting hole? Will it crack the chrome plating?

I've drilled through my rails with no chipping, cracking or any other blemish problems. Just use a hammer and hole punch or nail set, something with a point, to make a dimple/dent in the exact center of the hole you want to drill to keep the drill bit from wandering when you first start the hole. And use a drop of 3&1 or some such oil from time to time to keep the bit tip lubed and cool while drilling.

Troglobil,
Don't do it! You run the risk of ruining those rails.
Insted just use a sleeping bag rolled up to lean on and send me that pesky backrest

For best results use a brand new drill.

Can't you modify the PROtac bracket to lean back more??? OR bend the PROtrac uprights to lean more.....

I may have been able to bend the backets back some, but that would have changed the angle of the pad. It was easy enough to make two new holes a little further back. The saddle bags pretty much hide the brackets anyway. It feels a lot less cramped now.

put a couple of strips of electrical tape where you want to drill, then mark the hole on top of the tape with a proper center punch a nail or other things are liable to scoot along the crome when you hit them. then drill through the tape no problem, no marks on the chrome. Marking delicate things round the bike I found that the small spring center punch is ideal, a cracking wee tool, you just hold it where you want the mark and pull back the other end gently and let it go,,,the spring does the work,,no hammer..
