Oil Change Problem
08/16/08 at 14:09:10

Ok so I had to add a bit of oil here last week because the parts guy removed the side cover to see the oil filter thus leaking out some oil. I made a 300 mile run on Wednesday so I put some oil in it before I left. I didn't think that I had leaked much oil from checking the filter but it took a whole quart to get it up to the correct marks on the window.

So this morning I started my oil change and got to the point of filling it and I was filling up the second quart when I started to look at the window. I didn't see any oil down in the window which was pretty odd so I checked my manual. It says that if you are replacing the oil filter like I did you should add 2400-2500 ml so I finished off that quart and started to add another. When I got to the correct range and didn't see any oil down in the window yet I got concerned. I started up the bike to warm it up some and let it run for a few minutes then shut it down. I still don't see any oil down in the window even though it should be full.

Got any suggestions?

When you are checking the oil do you still have the bike on the side stand or holding it as verticle as you can? If you are keeping it on the stand chances are you won't see any oil in the site glass until you have seriously overfilled it.

Hold the bike as close to vertical as you can or have a someone else do it while you check out the site glass. That is the way to check the oil level in these bikes.

The manual is wrong it says 1800 cc if I remember on the case and usually 2 qts. well drained cans and maybe a little bit more if you rock it back and forth while you are draining the oil will do it. 2.5 is way much, as stated before oil level is check vertical level front to rear. Max

Yep... sounds like you didn't have the bike level.  When it's leaning on the kickstand,  you shouldn't see oil in the window.

to check the oil on your own ,I use a stick with a mirror glued to the end at the correct angle,or I guess you can use your wifes make up mirror, you will also need a light if you are in the garage.
